BRAD ON A SHORT LEASH IN BIG D?

As the Cowboys prepare for what could be their third and final game without starting quarterback Tony Romo, there’s news that replacement Brad Johnson might not be long for the job.

Per Ed Werder of ESPN, Johnson’s 122-yard passing performance against the Buccaneers could prompt the team to explore other options.

Including (gulp) giving Brooks Bollinger a try.

We were amazed a couple of weeks ago when the various sock puppets (we’re looking at you, four-letter network) were talking as if Johnson was a lot better than the guy who was in reality a turnover machine two years ago in Minnesota.

The dude is 40, and he plays like it. Period.

Bottom line? While it’s easy to blame the Cowboys for not having a better backup plan, there aren’t 32 good quarterbacks in the league right now. Though they’ve got one of them, not many (if any) have two.

Johnson “probably” will start this weekend against the Giants, and if he plays like he has the past two weeks the Cowboys “probably” will lose.

CULPEPPER CANCELS VISIT WITH CHIEFS

Daunte Culpepper will not be a Kansas City Chief.

Culpepper had a visit scheduled for tomorrow, but Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that Culpepper told the Chiefs today that he isn’t going to make the trip to Kansas City because he has a better opportunity with another team. It’s not known which team Culpepper has an offer from.

Glazer also reports that Culpepper told teams last week that he wanted to sign a contract for more than just the rest of this season, and that he wanted a 2009 payment of $10 million or more.

Obviously, no team is going to give Culpepper that kind of money, and by the end of the week Culpepper apparently realized that and told the Chiefs he wouldn’t need that much. But now Culpepper won’t be playing for the Chiefs for any amount.

ROY WILLIAMS POKES FUN AT TATUM

Former Lions receiver Roy Williams attended the team’s annual Halloween party on Monday night, according to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com.

And Williams came dressed as former Lions running back Tatum Bell.

Bell famously swiped (allegedly) the bags of newly-signed Lions running back Rudi Johnson in early September, after Bell was cut to make a space for Rudi.

Details of the costume (e.g., luggage, bellhop cap, Rudi’s wallet) weren’t mentioned.

UPDATE: Williams, per Kowalski, was wearing a bellhop uniform and boxers over his pants that said “Rudi” on the front and “Johnson 32″ on the back.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius will be out for the remainder of the 2008 season, a league source confirmed Wednesday.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said during his weekly news conference that the team is preparing to make an announcement on Jurevicius soon, and the coach hinted that it was "generally not good."

The Browns have until the end of this week to take Jurevicius off the physically-unable-to-perform list or deactivate him for the season. Jurevicius had routine knee surgery in the offseason but contracted a staph infection that set back his timetable to return.

"It's 99 percent sure that he is done for the season," the source said.

ARLEN SPECTER NOT DONE WITH THE NFL

U.S. Senator Arlen Specter hasn’t said much about Spygate recently, but that doesn’t mean he’s done with the NFL.

The New York Times reports that a group of Senators, led by Specter, sent Commissioner Roger Goodell a letter Tuesday criticizing the league for showing some games exclusively on NFL Network. According to the senators, the NFL should have seen that putting last season’s Week 17 Patriots-Giants game on free network TV was a success, and taken from that game the lesson that the NFL belongs on network television.

“We are disappointed that, rather than building on this success, the NFL will return to restricting games,” the letter read, according to the Times. “That the NFL would choose to have fewer viewers for select games again this year is an indication of its interest in moving toward a pay television model.”

Several cable companies have butted heads with the league over NFL Network. Comcast is one of those cable companies and has also been a major donor to Specter’s election campaigns.

This year’s first NFL Network game is Broncos at Browns on Thursday, November 6.

COLTS’ MARLIN JACKSON OUT FOR SEASON

The Indianapolis Colts have an uphill climb ahead of them just to get to the postseason. And if they are going to the playoffs, they’re going without one of their defensive starters.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that colts cornerback Marlin Jackson suffered a torn ACL and torn meniscus cartilage at Wednesday’s practice. He will need at least one knee surgery and is out for the season.

Jackson, a fourth-year player out of Michigan, started all seven games for the Colts this season and all 16 last season.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Tim Jennings is expected to replace Jackson in the starting lineup and that the Colts may re-sign cornerback Keiwan Ratliff to take Jackson’s spot on the roster.

Kerney now out for ailing Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. (AP)—Pro Bowl defensive end Patrick Kerney is out indefinitely and getting a second look at what’s wrong with his surgically repaired shoulder. It’s the latest in an epidemic of injuries for the teetering Seattle Seahawks.

Coach Mike Holmgren said Friday morning on his radio show that Kerney is returning to Alabama to see Dr. James Andrews. Andrews is the surgeon who repaired torn labrum cartilage in Kerney’s left shoulder after last season. The Seahawks’ top pass rusher re-injured the shoulder in last weekend’s win at San Francisco.

Holmgren told KIRO he hoped to know when—or if—Kerney can play again this season by Tuesday. Darryl Tapp and rookie Lawrence Jackson will start at ends in Sunday’s game against Philadelphia

PACKERS SIGN AARON RODGERS TO LONG-TERM DEAL

The Green Bay Packers have announced that quarterback Aaron Rodgers has signed a long-term contract extension.

The extension locks Rodgers up through the 2014 season, General Manager Ted Thompson said in the team’s statement.

“As we talked about in the past, we try to be proactive in our discussions with our current players and we felt like this was an appropriate time to try to come to an agreement with Aaron,” Thompson said. “We feel like this is good for the organization and the players, and we will continue this approach as we move forward.”

The 24-year-old Rodgers was the Packers’ first-round draft pick in 2005. After spending three seasons as Brett Favre’s backup, he has started all seven games this season and has a 98.8 passer rating.

If St. Louis Rams coach Jim Haslett makes a habit of reading running back Steven Jackson’s web site, he got some good news today.

As Adam Schefter of NFL Network points out, Jackson wrote on his web site today that he’s going to play tomorrow against the Cardinals.

“I want to let you all know that the leg is feeling good enough for me to go on Sunday,” Jackson wrote. “This is a big game for us against Arizona, and I’m going to give everything I’ve got to get us a win. So to be clear: I am playing. Be ready.”

Jackson sat out last weekend’s loss to the Patriots with a quadriceps injury. He is listed as questionable on the official injury report.

It would be nice to talk about that game on a thread where people will see it, but very few people go the college football threads, as they are buried.

Where are the Highschool football threads? The Highschool in my town was rated # 6 in the Chicago poll this year.

JIM KELLY WANTS TO BUY THE BILLS

With the family of the only owner in Bills history already making it known that they won’t keep the team after Ralph Wilson (now 90 years old) passes on, Peter King of NBC reports that Buffalo Hall of Famer quarterback Jim Kelly is trying to put a group together that would buy the team.

It’s unclear whether Kelly’s group would purchase the franchise in the short term, or whether the deal would wait until Mr. Wilson is playing pinochle with former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson.

Kelly’s goal is to keep the team in Western New York permanently. Whether that means playing one or two (or four) games each year in Toronto remains to be seen.

CHIEFS LOSE KOLBY SMITH

The Kansas City Chiefs lost more than a football game on Sunday. They also lost running back Kolby Smith for the rest of the season, with a knee injury.

Smith had 10 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown against Tampa.

He started six games in 2007 as the replacement for Larry Johnson, who had a broken foot.

Jamaal Charles and Larry Johnson will carry the load for the Chiefs moving forward, if/when Johnson ever gets back on the field.
