Default First Day of Spring Practice...Players feel very confident about season.

Published Thursday, March 23, 2006

Huskers back at it

By Eric Olson
AP Sports Writer

LINCOLN -- Adam Carriker was talking about winning the Big 12 North. Corey McKeon was talking about having one of the five best defenses in the nation. Zac Taylor was talking about a renewed sense of confidence among the Nebraska football team.

Apparently the positives derived from three straight wins to end last season carried over as the Cornhuskers began spring practice Wednesday.

"We play a tougher schedule, but we can be very good," said Carriker, the Huskers' star defensive end. "We have a lot of returning people, and we're familiar with the system. There is no excuse, no reason why we shouldn't be very good and playing in the Big 12 title game."

Coach Bill Callahan said there finally is continuity and stability at Nebraska after two seasons of tumult.

A year ago the Huskers went into spring practice off three straight losses at the end of a 5-6 campaign in 2004. Callahan was still trying to install, and sell, his West Coast offense. He also was looking for a starting quarterback.

This spring the Huskers continue to draw positive vibes from their three-game win streak to end last year's 8-4 season. And they have an experienced, if not seasoned, starting quarterback in Taylor.

"There's a real, definite correlation to take a strong finish and build on it," Callahan said. "It's not the end-all. If we look back at the '05 season and say this is as good as we can be, we'd be fooling ourselves.

"We have to continually compete and take our competitive level up to bring a championship home to Nebraska. That's what we have to do this spring."

The Huskers have eight starters back on offense and seven on defense.

McKeon, who had a team-leading 97 tackles from his middle linebacker spot, said the players in position to take over for the lost starters can be as good or better than the ones they're replacing.

Key holes are in the secondary, where Tierre Green and Andrew Shanle are front-runners at safety, and in the defensive line, where Ola Dagundaro and Barry Cryer are vying for the tackle jobs.

McKeon said if those four progress as he expects them to, "we're going to be a very troublesome defense going into fall camp."

Callahan said players to watch are I-back Marlon Lucky, the heir apparent to Cory Ross; and newcomers Tyrell Spain at wide receiver and Victory Haines at offensive line.

A number of players have changed positions. Backup quarterback Jordan Adams is now a free safety. Also moving to free safety are former wide receiver Dan Erickson and former cornerback Bryan Wilson.

Former cornerbacks Green and Ben Eisenhart are now strong safeties. The strongside linebacker corps has new members in former defensive end Dontrelle Moore and former middle linebacker Lance Brandenburgh. Craig Roark has moved from offensive line to nose tackle.

Six players have been ruled out of spring practice after having off-season shoulder surgeries. They are offensive linemen Kurt Mann, Jordan Picou and Newton Lingenfelter, defensive end Tony Sullivan, running back Brandon Jackson and linebacker Nick Covey.

Backup place-kicker Eric Lueshen is out until fall after having back surgery last week.

Erickson, the free safety, will be limited after having his appendix taken out.

Ruled out of contact work are linebackers Stewart Bradley and Bo Ruud. Bradley had knee surgery, and Ruud continues to go through rehabilitation after breaking his arm before the Alamo Bowl.

Winning the Big 12 north is a given, and so is the big 12 period. whose going to challenge us? Texas with out huff of young? right. Oklahoma with the one man team in Peterson? please.those two will still be good teams but I think we will be better. Colorado? hahahaha? we win the big 12 alltogether and that means bcs game.

Carriker evidently enjoyed a strong off-season. "Freak of nature" is how McKeon described Carriker, listed at 6-foot-6, 295 pounds this spring after being listed at 280 last fall.

"He's gotten bigger and stronger and faster at the same time," McKeon said. "He's gotten to the point where he's not running sprints with the D-line -- he's running with the linebackers now."

Adam Carriker, that’s the guy that will surprise people the most. We all know he was good last year. But he’s a real freak now. He’s a totally different man out there now. He hit the weight room — he’s bigger and faster. He’s gonna have a really good spring.
Thats a qoute from Bullocks.

I really want this guy to be a Bronco. Odds are he will be off the board before we pick in the first round. I would really like him to go Peppers on teams this year

Carriker packs on muscle to increase intimidation

ROBIN WASHUT
March 23, 2006

As Adam Carriker strolled in front of the room full of cameras and reporters, everything his teammate Corey McKeon said just minutes earlier finally made sense.

After seeing just how much bigger, buffer and downright more intimidating the senior-to-be defensive end had gotten since last December, it was no wonder why McKeon could only describe Carriker as a ``freak of nature.''``He's gotten so much bigger, stronger and faster, it's ridiculous,'' McKeon said. ``He's a freak of nature, that's the best way I can put it.''

Coming off the best season of his career in 2005, Carriker showed up for the first day of Nebraska's spring practice on Wednesday a massive 6-foot-6, 295 pounds - the majority of it pure muscle.

Last season when he broke out with a team-best 9.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, Carriker weighed in at just 280 pounds.

Not only that, Carriker also reportedly clocked in a hand-timed 4.68 seconds in the 40-yard dash during the Cornhuskers' winter conditioning.

To put that time in perspective, most 300-pounders average about 5 seconds flat in the run. McKeon, arguably one of Nebraska's fastest linebackers, ran a 4.5.

``He is scary,'' said NU Defensive Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove. ``He's gotten bigger and stronger, and he really challenged his body in a short period of time. We really appreciate all of his hard work.

``He's about as physically impressive as anybody I've ever been around.''According to Carriker, the biggest adjustment he made to his training regiment during the offseason was in his diet.

After admittedly eating Burger King and Taco Bell nearly three or four times per week, Carriker met with Nebraska's team nutritionist James Harris and developed a strict eating schedule.

With chicken breasts, fruits and vegetables making up practically every meal, Carriker said he saw quick results in his size and muscle tone.

``Before I never really cared what I ate,'' Carriker said. ``When I started this new diet, at first it really sucked because I hated chicken breasts. But it definitely made a difference.''

For Carriker, a change in diet was only a small piece of a much bigger plan to make the most of his final season as a Husker.

Following Nebraska's victory over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl in December, Carriker opted to turn down a chance at entering the NFL Draft to return to Lincoln for one last shot at a Big 12 Conference championship - something the Huskers haven't won since 1999.

In his opinion, NU's talent, depth and newfound confidence this season were simply too much to pass up.

``Our goal is to play in a BCS game and win a Big 12 title,'' Carriker said. ``Every team says that's their goal at the beginning of the year, but you honestly have to have the personnel to do it, and we do.''

``You battle through so much stuff to where you get to the point where there's no excuses.''

If Carriker can somehow replicate his 2005 success this season, combined with his new physique, there's no telling how far his draft stock could rise by next April.

Considering that there are only three combined offensive linemen on the rosters of Nebraska's first three opponents this season - including Southern California - that weigh more than 10 pounds of Carriker, there's no telling just how dominant he could be in 2006.

As far as McKeon goes, he's just glad he and Carriker will be on the same side of the ball this season.

``You look at him and you're like, `Yeah, he's on my team,''' McKeon said

Oh yeah baby. I can't wait to watch him this year. I just hope that he plays like he can. 290 and still runs a 4.68 40. Thats what I want to see

SPAIN IMPRESSES: Wide receiver Tyrell Spain made a positive impression on Nebraska coaches with his performance during winter conditioning. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder continues to impress in spring camp, said wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore. Indeed, Spain, who sat out last season because of academic issues, already has enjoyed significant time with the first-team offense. “I try to pick and choose which situations to put him in, because I don’t want to ruin his confidence,” Gilmore said. “By the same token, I want to put some pressure on him to learn.”

Gilmore also noted that wideout Frantz Hardy added 10 pounds to his 6-foot frame since last season, when he had 25 receptions for 349 yards

I don't know if this is going to be a problem but we seem to have alot of young talent at WR. Spain is impressive. From what I've been told he would have been our best WR last year if he could have played. Nunn from what I've been reading has improved and Swift was our best WR last year. He finished the year very strong. Hardy looks better, he was a 4 star that struggled but he looks better this year. Chris Brooks attitude sucked to start with but from the sounds of it he doing better. We added two more talented WRs. Purify could be awesome but I think he should RS this year. Holt is a juco so he can't really afford to sit out. Here is the break down of them

Hardy-Junior
Swift-Soph
Nunn- Junior
Brooks-Soph
Purify-Fresh
Holt-Soph?

Those are the guys that should see the most action. Not bad group for Taylor in his Senior year.

We have some pretty good wr's. props to callahan. he is a good recruiter. we are going to be a better team this year. I am a little concerned that ross is gone but Lucky, for some reason, I think he is going to be a stud. pluss codey glenn is pretty good too. I somtimes wonder if they will be better than ross. ross is in the top 10 rb's in nebraska history. He is a big reason for our sucess last year. could lucky or glenn mathch that? I belive so, but somtimes I doubt myself. I think my uncertainty comes from glenns and lucky's inexperience. for some reason I know they will be good, but they haven't proven anything to me. but I belive in them.

Lucky is a 5 star RB, the second best RB in that class. He is talented and the job is his to lose. Glenn is a monster of a RB. 6'0" 230! He is hard to stop at the goal line and is doing damn good in camp so far. Thats where the real battle will be in camp this year. I want Lucky to live up to his talent, because if he does this team will be pretty damn good next year.

The truth is that Callahan is a joke. He will run that program in the ground before he is through with it.

BTW that win in the Alamo Bowl was over an over-rated Michigan team. Callahan will not even come close to accomplishing what Solich did at Nebraska IMO.

Im betting he will be better than solich. I mean I was upset at first when solich left because he ran the option, and that's what osbourne did and was obviously sucessful at it for many years. I didn't think at the time we should have changed that. Why fix somthing that aint broke? but solich was a horrible evalulator or talant and bringing in recruits. see jamal lord. fast as hell, but not that great of a qb. I think he would have made a good wr. he had corey ross as a db when ross first came here. Calahan has brought in right people, very good recruits to run the west coast, and it is showing. It's not perfect, but it's working. he is only in his second year. there is more to improve on, but we are definatly in the right direction. don't underestimate him. he had to rebuild a team that is tought option to west coast. that's pretty hard to do in two years as much as he has accomplised. next year will be better. as far as our D goes. Well cosgrove has done a great job keeping the black shirts as their dominant selves. I was upset we didn't keep polini (sp) but cosgrove has done an excellent job.

Default Cody f***in Glenn is a beast!!!!!!

Nebraska I-back Cody Glenn capped a strong opening week of spring practice with a *seven-carry, 61-yard performance Saturday as the Huskers ended their workout with a 28-play live scrimmage at the Hawks Championship Center.

“It felt really good for me,” said the 6-foot, 230-pound Glenn, battling fellow sophomores Marlon Lucky and Leon Jackson for the starting job. “It gave everybody a chance to see where they were at.”

The 6-foot, 210-pound Lucky carried four times for 20 yards and also had a 15-yard reception. The 6-1, 210-pound Jackson rushed once for 12 yards.

Saturday marked Nebraska’s third and final practice of the first week and its first in full pads. In the “first-and-10 scrimmage,” the offense received a point if it gained four or more yards. If the offense failed to gain four yards, the defense received a point. Final tally: Defense 17, offense 11.

“That’s why you saw the offensive players running (sprints) at the end,” Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said. “Of course, the defensive players will eat first today for lunch.”

Quarterback Zac Taylor completed 3 of 5 passes for 24 yards, and backup Harrison Beck was 3-for-5 for 46 yards. Earlier in the practice, Beck struggled during a 7-on-7 drill, misfiring on 9 of 11 passes and throwing two interceptions, one by Matt O’Hanlon, the other by Brandon Rigoni. Taylor was 11-for-16 during the 7-on-7 drill.

Callahan said he remains confident in Beck.

“Guys are going to have ‘off’ days,” the coach said. “We put a lot of things into the offense today. I’m very patient in that respect. I don’t jump to any conclusions, and I look at it as a coaching opportunity to improve Harrison. He’ll get better. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

Glenn ripped off runs of 30 and 20 yards.

“The thing that impresses me is he continues to build speed and power through the hole,” Callahan said. “Not only does he have that attribute, but he still has that cut ability and he has a little elusiveness in his game as well.

“The big thing is he continues to improve as a player. His (pass) protection skills have really improved, and his ability to run routes down field on the perimeter has really been important. He’s becoming more complete as a back, just like all of our backs.”

-- ‘BONDING SESSION’: After engaging in a heated scuffle during Friday’s practice, neither wideout Grant Mulkey nor linebacker Steve Octavien was on hand for Saturday’s practice. “They were having a little bonding today,” Callahan said. “They did some bonding off the field, away from the team, to get their minds right.” Callahan said it was important to quickly address the issue. “The thing is, I want to be able to practice right. There’s a certain code of ethics when you practice together. It’s a privilege to practice together.”

-- HERIAN UPDATE: Senior tight end Matt Herian, recovering from a broken leg suffered in October of 2004, didn’t participate in Saturday’s practice. He jogged around the edges of the field without shoulder pads or a helmet. In addition to his leg injury, Herian has been bothered by a sore hamstring.

-- YOUNGSTERS INVADE: A total of 529 children ages 8 through eighth grade participated in the Husker Youth Experience following Saturday’s practice. After a simulated Tunnel Walk onto the indoor field, Husker players and coaches sent the kids through various drills, much like a practice. “It was great to see the little Huskers come out and spend an afternoon with our players,” Callahan said. The kids also watched motivational videos shown to the team before games.

Harrison Beck will be a damn good player if he keeps working hard. I watched him play down here and he has worlds of talent.

What exactly did Solich do? He inherited a perennial national championship contender and turned it into the Purdue of the Big 12. Billy C had to gut the program to get thing back on track, and this is the year that they will be a contender again......mark it down.

[got to love offseason smack ]

I am the biggest Cannaspam hater in the world, but even I have to admit he is doing a pretty good job.
