Missing the bowl game was inevitable.

The utter annihilations of NU by Colorado, Kansas State, and now Iowa State, Missouri, and even KANSAS, has really set the tone for Nebraska football for this decade.

Like I said, Nebraska will probably be pretty good in years to come, and will compete for the Big XII North title just about every year, and even the Big XII title some years, but they will no longer be the class of the Big XII year in and out, ever.

If the option offense doesn't work anymore somebody might want to let Paul Johnson and Navy know that as he continues to beat up on programs with superior talent using it. He took over a program that was 1-20 in their 21 games before he got there. After one bad season to get his option offense in place he went 8-5, 10-2 and 8-4. 3 straight bowls and consecutive bowl victories.

Prior to that he took over a 4-7 Georgia Southern team and went 10-3 in his first year and went on to win back to back Division II National Championships in just 5 seasons before heading to Navy. So in summary if 419 yards of offense per game along with 32.6 points per game with inferior talent is broken then I can't imagine what a non-broken system would look like.
good post, as much as it pains me to say it

Thanks. It just pains me to see Nebraska run away from the system that made them great. And the system is far from broken, if anything the fact that fewer and fewer programs are using it, it is probably more effective than ever as most teams see it less and less and aren't as comfortable playing against it. I think the reason most schools, Nebraska included, have foolishly gone away from it is purely because they aren't able to recruit the NFL caliber WR and QB's. Big Effin Whoop! College football is about winning not about keeping a scorecard as to who has the most NFL players active in the league. With the option system you will get top notch RB's that want to play in the system, very good OLineman and top notch defensive talent and the last I checked when you put together top notch defensive talent with a great running game you tend to kick a lot of backsides.

But hey, if getting NFL caliber WRs and QBs while going 6-5 every season is more important than playing in BCS bowls 2 out of every 3 years then that is their prerogative.

There isn't a team that will! With the parity going on in college as much as it is in the NFL now, there is no team in the Big XII that will every dominate again. Not even ut.

I can't disagree with that. It is hard to sustain a dynasty in this day and age. Parity makes it hard for any school to rule their conference for long. I'll be happy to compete for the Big XII every few years and an occasional naitonal title run.

As for moving away from the option, I guess I have mixed feelings. I don't doubt that it can be successful even today. It is really hard, though, to be an elite team in the nation running it. Aside from the Osborne teams can you name any recent powerhouse team focused on the option? It can win games, but without the perfect recruits and coaches it won't win NC's in today's game. You need a balance, something Solich never really embraced.

Going to a West Coast offense may have been too drastic IMO. Still, I have a little more faith in Callahan than Naptown. If the promise of NFL experience brings the best talent, so be it. I miss the days when the Big Red could run over any opponent, but I'll be plenty happy to see them beat teams through the air. I know that there were a few years in the 70's or 80's when NU was more pass oriented. It was only later that the option focused attack arrived. Next year will be very telling. Hopefully they can build on this year's improvements starting tonight.

Funny you should list Colorado and KSU there, because we beat them both this year, and we absolutely stomped Colorado.

While I can understand NU not being given the same respect it was in years past, I just don't understand all this doom and gloom talk. Callahan is just now finishing his 2nd year as our coach and we are very much improved from the 1st year.

Sorry Saul, maybe it'd be easier to take you and others seriously if you didn't seem so eager for NU to fail, even though it's just your opinion.

Naptown - You got a good point there. I'm not at all against the option game returning if it can be done effectively here, and if Callahan doesn't accomplish something meaningful, he will likely be shown the door, so we may see the option game return.

Regardless, let's just enjoy the game tonight....GO HUSKERS!!

That's the one drawback to the option game...at least is was for us during the Solich years...if you stopped the running game we couldn't pass on you. Osborne never seemed to have that problem though.

I'm confident in Callahan, but he certainly wasn't my choice for HC. Regardless, he's here now and we might as well support him 100%

Our defense is playing pretty darn good, despite the offense during it's best to screw them, so now the offense has to step up.
