Default Looking at the Broncos Offseason Moves

Overall Denver had a good year. 11 game winning streak to finish the year, 13-3, 6-0 in the division. Had 3 all pro's on the AP all pro team and I think that Manning and Von Miller will both probably finish runner up for NFL MVP/DMVP to AP and JJ Watt. Both guys coming back so we'll have another successful year next season. I see us some where in the 12-4/11-5 range with a very tough schedule, will win the AFC West again and contend for a chance to hoist Lombardi's trophy.

The loss to Baltimore sucks. Yes, we choked. Officials took a lot of plays from us but we also did ourselves in. At the end of the day, JE & the team needs to stay the course. Have another solid draft that continues stock talent on the roster that McDaniels squandered for a few years. On offense, Peyton Manning will be 37. Elway didn't win his first ring until 37 and then 38. Difference being he had TD and a great OL. I think we have an ok OL, but we need to find an answer at HB. We'll have 18 million under the cap, good for top 5 in the league. More if we renegotiate/cut DJ Williams contract. We'll resign Ryan Clady and i'm sure there will be some vet FA's looking to jump on a roster to win a ring. I think it's about time Champ starts thinking about S. I still think he can play CB at a high level but his athleticism is fading. Guys like Rod Woodson made that transition and it extended their career 4-5 years. I think Champ will do the same. I like our young CB's but we'll need to add another guy.

My thoughts based on position:

QB - Obviously Peyton needs to step his game up in the playoffs but had a great regular season, best ever as a Bronco statistically. I hope Brock is absorbing everything Manning has in practice, games and preparation. We look set here for the next 2-5 years if things go according to plan.

HB - Moreno is under contract and I think he will be back and is a serviceable backup. His playoff disappearance is the problem i've always had with him. I do think he matured as a player this year. If he can come to grips with understanding he can have a nice contributing career, while not being the guy, he will be fine. Manning appears to like him. Ronnie Hillman I thought did a good job during the playoff game but has a long way to go. I think Ball is gone unless we go cheap. DeAngelo Williams from Carolina is a guy that will be moving on most likely from where he is at. I doubt we find a workhorse unless a steal falls to us in the draft... they are hard to come by but I think Williams has low miles, and has played for Fox. Dick Woodhead is a FA. Could go that direction as well.

WR - Don't see any quick fixes here in FA. Amendola/Welker are guys people will talk about nationally, i don't know how well they fit here. I think they would be a great fit with what Manning likes to do but I would rather see some speed who can alter what the defense does to us. Baltimore simply sat two deep on us the whole game and we couldn't get the ball to our two possession WR's. In some ways I think it lost us the game, along w/ a lack of consistent running the ball. The offense flows through Demarius Thomas. He stopped and the offense struggled. Might be where we spend our 1st or 2nd round pick and let them get tutored up by Manning but I think a high quality guy is a necessity here.

TE - Tamme does a decent job but isn't a huge difference maker athletically. Dreesen is a not factor. I'd probably look at the Eifert kid from ND in the draft if he is there in the first OR could go the FA route and look at Jared Cook/Dustin Keller. I think both are underrated pass catching TE's who were miscast with their team and have better than average athletic ability and hands. Another interesting thought would be Tony Gonzales. I think he's pretty close to hanging it up and is openly talking about it after this year especially if Atlanta loses today. He's a free agent though. If he decides to give it one last go (still playing at an incredibly high level), it could be appealing for him to pair up w/ Manning for a championship run for the next couple years.

OL - Should keep the band together for another year. We'll need to look at C and interior G, probably through the draft, rounds 3-4. Would love to get a vet to come in and challenge at LG vs. Beadles. A Chilo Rachal type. Zane is not terrible, not great but needs to be pushed. We'll resign Clady, Franklin got better this year I thought from his first season. Kuper when healthy was good, but had a bad game against Ngata and the Ravens. Ramirez was OK considering what we asked of him in his first season. Koppen is serviceable. JD Walton will be back as well.

DL - Need to make some moves here. Like what we have at DE w/ Doom, Wofle, Ayers, Hunter healthy and Malik Jackson flashed some stuff this year but DT position lacks play making ability to truly impact having outside rushers like Miller & Doom. They all play the run fairly well. Bannan is a FA and a local guy. I imagine we resign him to a cheap rotational contract. I thought Vickerson was very solid, flashed occasionally. If the right guy is there in the draft, I wouldn't mind taking a shot but would rather see us spend some FA money on a guy like Alan Branch who has played some good minutes for Pete Carroll this year at SEA, or even roll the dice on a guy like Glenn Dorsey from KC. Some will be down on him but I still like him in a 4-3 defense. KC of course was a 3-4 defense.

LB - Woodyard/Von Miller had a breakout year for the Broncos. We seem pretty good there. DJ Williams is the wildcard. Dude was on the bench much of yesterday, Brooking started over him. I think that's a huge issue. I imagine moving DJ means we'll get some cap relief there. Would have thought he could start though and maybe he can at MLB unless he is a liability there. Nate Irving has been a around awhile, Danny Trevathan I thought had a good year. Could look to add a player here rd 1-4 or a FA.

DB - I like some depth that we have here. Chris Harris has a very good year IMO, and Tony Carter made some big plays but is unpolished. He struggled yesterday in coverage vs. Bolden. Omar Boldin played as a 4th rounder, primarily on special teams but got some experience. Probably needs another year and another guy here especially if they look at moving Champ eventually to safety. I thought Champ had a good year, but his speed is starting to wane. I would think it's better to move him to safety too early, vs. too late. With the cash Denver has, they could be in the market to bring in another corner. Rogers Cromartie will be a FA from Philly and I can't believe Asomugha sticks around in Philly too long with his contract. Safety is of concern unless they move Champ. I still think Moore will get better, his ****ting the bed moment aside. Him and Champ would make us pretty solid back there for the next 2-4 years. Adams played decent this year. Didn't make many plays, gave up a few. Would love to see Quintin Carter come back healthy, he played better IMO than Moore did their rookie season. Nothing guaranteed though.

Specialists - Easy to get down on Prater after he flubbed that kick but the guy has pretty much been money the past two years. Colquitt is good and we found a gem in Holliday. Just hope he can develop better hands.

Agree with most everything.....except Prater. He slumped badly this year and didn't earn his pay. We can't afford to keep him unless he restructures downward significantly. The money would be better spent elsewhere, and
kicking in Mile high gives him an edge he didn't uphold this year. At the very least bring in competition and see if we can get cheaper there with some rookie.

My thoughts:

Fire the DB coach....obviously he's not worth a turd!
Sign or draft a legitimate difference maker at DT....enough already!
Use your #1 on either the best MLB or CB in the draft
We need a stud in the middle to qb our defense
We need a CB to start opposite Champ...maybe Cromartie or other, Let Harris stick to the nickle...he's better inside.
Sign or draft a speed guy utilize in 3/4 wide receiver sets
Keep Moreno, and Magahee and go get Williams...I agree there. Hillman can make the roster as a change of pace guy.
Draft for depth at oline. We need another Center/guard guy with top talent, and we need a better answer at backup Tackle.
Lastly we need our HC to play to win the game....not play to try to not lose the game. 3rd and 7 with 2:00 left and the best QB in the business and we hand it off to a rb we picked up off the scrap heap a month ago. We convert that first down...and not run it 3x in a row when they have 11 guys in the box, we win the game. Fox played to lose...and guess what? We lost!

Yup, he's way overpaid. As of right now he'll be the 7th highest paid Bronco next year, and potentially the 5th highest paid, according to IAOFM today.

I also believe a team should draft a QB every year. In case you haven't noticed, this is a QB driven league. Brock may not be the answer and we must continue to search for one that can take over for Manning. I wouldn't be pissed if they drafted one in the 2nd or 3rd round every year. The reward is worth the risk of giving up a high pick every year.

They need to get stronger up the middle on defense, and faster on offense.

I love how people on here are saying we need another CB to play opposite of Champ when he gave up two TD's yesterday to a younger, faster guy. Maybe they draft a CB to replace Champ?

That's not a knock on Champ, it's just the mandate of Father Time....maybe Champ needs to look at himself objectively and move to safety?

I like Zach Ertz for TE, but unfortunately, I don't think this is the year for the Broncos to use their highest pick on the position.

Co-signed. Not even a Moreno hater but the guy has no burst. Still useful and worth keeping around, IMO.

I won't get into names, but...

I think the middle of the defense is a good place to start. DT and Mike should be addressed. Champ had a great year and a bad game...and i still think the weather had something to do with that. I don't know why people are saying Harris is better at nickel. I think he's pretty damn good anywhere.

I'd like a speedy playmaker on O, and would take a long look at Tavon Austin at the end of the first round.

Would Brooking, Bannan, Vickerson, or Adams start for any team playing this weekend?

Move Champ to Safety, and look for a quality CB.

We have a few needs but if I was to look at adding some items, getting some playmakers on offense would be my first priority. I think Decker is solid, but he gator arms some passes. Not really a guy you can count on against better corners. DT is a guy I felt we could but he completely disappeared last night. DOn't know if that was lack of coaching or Baltimore just did that good of a job on defense. Tamme is solid but not specatucular. Getting a guy in the slot that can lift the coverage or a TE who can effectively run the seems would be huge to maximize what Peyton does.

Obviously figuring out who will be our every day runner, hopefully a difference maker would be huge too.

I think Harris is quicker than fast and he's tough...meaning he can cover slot guys like Boldin and take on tight ends and RB's. he probably runs a 4.6 though and can be a liability on the outside...which is why they were playing Carter outside.

I said opposite Champ...because Champ is still better than Harris, Carter and anyone else we have. My main point is, we need another top corner to add to the mix. Porter didn't work out, and Carter is better at the dime, then starting on the outside...and he's too small to play nickle. Harris is the perfect nickle back and a liability on the outside.

One last note on CB's. Can we please start drafting bigger CB's...in the 6ft area at least We have this fixation on 5'9"/5'10" corners....Carter, Harris, Bolden, Foxworth, DW, and others. You need big fast guys on the outside to contend with these WR's and TE's that are eating up the league. Especially in the red-zone!

Needs schmeeds. As long as we have a coach that wilts under pressure and goes ultraconservapuss, it won't matter what kind of talent we bring in.

13-3, HFA, and with a top ranked offense and top ranked defense means we have about the fewest needs of any team in the league.

BPC-

Finally getting back to this thread with my thoughts.

I really like a few of your ideas on possible FA gets. I would LOVE to see Jared Cook come to Denver. He is a GREAT receiving TE and would add another dimension. I also really like the idea of DeAngelo Williams as another RB. He should be relatively fresh having split so many carries the last few years.

I also really like the ND TE. I just don't see the Broncos going after ANY TE FA or draft after just signing Dressen and Tamme last off season...I hope I'm wrong. I for one would not be opposed to getting Austin from WVU in the draft. More than likely would have to be had in the 1st round though. We are in DIRE need of some speed in this offense. One way or another it must be addressed.

My personal favorite pick would have to be Barret Jones though. At the VERY least he would be AMAZING depth at all three OL positions.

I also have not looked into the prospects as much, but now will...ugh I hate being out of the playoffs. Thanks again for the great thread!
