There is so much we don't know about our own Solar system let alone our own planet. This is why we need to explore our own back yard.

Magnetic fields and in turn magnetospheres in general are absolutely not defined by Earth's parameters. My main point is that the breadth of said fields is directly correlated to a planets rotation propelling this energy away from the core in which it is created, out into space. Jupiter has a magnetosphere that swallows Earth's proportionately, due to mass. The same basic empirical properties that govern atmospheres hold sway over these solar radiation shields. It all emanates from a center of mass, which in our case is Earth.

On a side note, wouldn't you have rather gone back to the moon with HD cameras and modern tech before landing another rover on Mars? It's been 40 some years, and yet we don't go back, and have no plan to.

As these convective patterns change over time, the resulting magnetic field can weaken, become erratic, and even reverse polarity.

So you can see how the direction of the spin of the Earth would not need to change, just the convective patterns of the molten magnetic material in the Earth, to explain a pole reversal.

The electrical charge doesn't leave the core. Think of a magnetic field like gravity. It's a force that acts on things. Gravity is a force between things with mass, magnetism is a force between things with some specific properties.

The magnetosphere is generated when charges particle (from the sun, or something out in space) interact with the earths magnetic field.
