I read in some articles this week that if we can beat USC then we will be ranked as high as the top 3. Also, there are some articles that claim if Taylor has a good game he will start being nationally recognized as one of the top QB's. That is all if he can do what he has been doing against a better team like USC. I don't know that we would jump as high as #3 from 19 but it would be nice to at least be in the top 10 again.

GO HUSKERS!!!

It would be nice, but I seriously doubt we'd break the top ten.

Best we could ever hope for is jumping 5 or 6 spots. I know Tenn jumped 11 but that doesn't happen that often. The Taylor thing I agree with.

If you hurry you can hear what they have to say about NU on around the horn.

I am at work but they will replay it in a couple hours. At least they do here, I guess it will be different in other places.

Thanks for the heads up.

Nice article in the Steamboat Pilot & Today.

Linkage

I emerged from the bowels of Memorial Stadium a lone Buffalo on the Great Plains.

In the weeks leading up to my trip, I had thought nothing of flaunting my Colorado Buffaloes gear in enemy territory, but my pre-game confidence quickly gave way to the realization that I was outnumbered — 85,181 to one. Me. Alone. And yes, even a little bit scared.

Of course, I would soon discover I had nothing to fear, and that upset me even more. It was as if the Big Red Nation wanted to prove it was better than me — us.

They did, and it wasn’t hard.

As I walked along the chain-link fence that separated the University of Nebraska players from the fans who idolize them, I felt a little like one of those poor Louisiana Tech players on the visitor’s sideline — outnumbered, undersized and pretty sure that at some point of the day I would be humiliated. (They were, by a score of 49-10. And so was I, but CU’s opening-game loss to Division I-AA Montana State wasn’t announced until most of the crowd had left the stadium.)

As a proud CU alum, there was nothing about the University of Nebraska that I could even pretend to like. The Cornhuskers are the Giants to my Dodgers, the Raiders to my Broncos.

But that was before my visit to Lincoln, Neb.

Don’t get me wrong — I never have been nor ever will be a Cornhuskers fan. But I just can’t conjure up the hate like I used to, and it’s because the University of Nebraska is what my beloved CU will never be: a college football paradise.

It was instantly apparent how much better of a college football atmosphere thrives in Lincoln than ever will in Boulder. It’s like comparing apples to oranges, or Champs Sport Bowls to Orange Bowls.

n The student section was standing-room only 45 minutes before kick off; CU students often don’t file in to Folsom Field until the second quarter, if they bother to show up at all.

n Nebraska’s marching band actually takes the time to learn each opponent’s fight song — and plays it before the game as a sign of respect. At Folsom Field, visiting players (and their fans) are greeted with hurled oranges, marshmallows and language that would make Andrew Dice Clay blush.

n Pouring rain had zero — ZERO — effect on attendance at Memorial Stadium last weekend. In Boulder, a light drizzle provides many “fans” with an excuse to not go to the game.

n Cornhuskers fans know every team cheer, chant and song. The best-known cheer at CU is an eight-word diddy that includes two f-bombs.

I had always joked that Nebraskans so love their football team because their geographic misfortune leaves them little else to do. And that still may be the case, but I have a new respect for the greatest fans in college football. And in case they should forget, there are signs over every stadium entrance (“Through these gates pass the Greatest Fans in college football) reminding them of their place in our football-crazed country.

I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. And if I’m lucky, I’ll get to see it again.

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Troy at Nebraska, Sept. 23 - OK, the Trojans of Troy aren't the same as the perennial powerhouse Trojans of USC the Huskers faced Sept. 16. Still, the Troy program has matured quickly since it suffered three straight defeats to Nebraska by a collective margin of 103-30 from 2001-03. After playing Florida State to a 24-17 decision and then playing Georgia Tech even before allowing three fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 35-20 setback, Troy is improved despite a 1-2 mark. Two dangerous wide receivers, Gary Banks and Toris Rutledge, will test the NU secondary.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

RB Cody Glenn - How he will be deployed has become an issue after Glenn did not carry the ball at USC. Entering that game, he was the Huskers' second-leading rusher with 135 yards on 24 carries.

P Dan Titchener - Proved he's capable of pulling off a fake after throwing for a first down on 4th-and-2 from his own 36 in the loss at Southern Cal. Titchener hit WR Todd Peterson in stride for a 28-yard gain, the Huskers' longest play from scrimmage in the first half.

LB Stewart Bradley - Led the Huskers with 10 stops and also forced a fumble. Joined DE Barry Turner in a tackle for loss, one of just three recorded by the NU defense in the loss at USC.

ROSTER REPORT

RB Marlon Lucky injured his elbow in the third quarter against USC trying to retrieve a botched handoff. He did not return. His injury, coupled with no carries by Cody Glenn, left Kenny Wilson as the Huskers' dominant rusher.

C Kurt Mann remains doubtful for the Troy game with what NU coach Bill Callahan described as a virus. Mann had started 24 straight games before missing the last two.

FB Dane Todd became the 11th Nebraska player to be named to the Good Works Team, which is sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association and recognizes community service

The rest of the BIG XII had better learn the name Marlon Lucky. He is killing Troy. Two 35+ yard TD runs and 96 yards. With ten minutes left in the first half.

I thought this could be a dangerous game for us. Troy played FSU and Ga. Tech very tough and was supposed to be solid passing team, our weakness on defense. Nice to see how wrong I was. Bring on the conference!

Lucky, not luck, leads to dominating Nebraska victory

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A week after its loss at Southern California, No. 23 Nebraska took out its frustration on another bunch of Trojans.

Marlon Lucky ran for 156 yards and three long touchdowns, Kenny Wilson ran for 106 yards and two scores and Zac Taylor passed for 268 yards in a 56-0 victory over Troy on Saturday night.

It was a dominating performance by the Cornhuskers (3-1), who had been criticized for coach Bill Callahan's conservative offensive game plan in last week's 28-10 loss at USC.

"I just feel like everybody kind of gave up on us after the USC game, and a lot of people were down on us when we came into the Troy game because Troy almost beat Florida State and Georgia Tech," said receiver Terrence Nunn, who caught four passes for 102 yards. "We're a hell of a team, too."

Held to 211 yards last week, the Huskers blew past that total early in the second quarter on their way to a season-high 597.

"A lot people put us to the side and said we got blown out by USC. That's not the case," Taylor said. "It's important that we showed we're still the same team we were at the beginning of the season."

Taylor was 14-of-17 for 268 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Joe Ganz in the middle of the third quarter.

Troy (1-3), which led Florida State in the fourth quarter two weeks ago and was tied with Georgia Tech in the fourth quarter last week, couldn't overcome Nebraska's big plays and its own penalties. The Huskers had nine plays of 20 yards or longer. Three of them were Lucky touchdown runs of 34, 45 and 51 yards.

On Troy's first four possessions alone, the Trojans were flagged for intentional grounding, two illegal formations, a false start, holding and offensive pass interference. They were penalized 10 times for 80 yards.
Nebraska scored on four of its first five possessions and led 28-0 at half.
Callahan said he was gratified with the way his team bounced back from last week's loss.

"I'm really excited about our defense throwing a shutout," he said. "It was a good win for our team in the way that we handled ourselves in preparation coming off last week. It just shows the maturity of this team."

Troy coach Larry Blakeney said the Huskers were too big and fast for the Trojans.

"This is the best football team we've seen in a long time," Blakeney said. "I don't know what they call that offense, whether it's the West Coast or East Coast or South Coast or Canadian, but it gave us more than we could handle."

The Huskers recorded their first shutout in 32 games, since a 28-0 win over Iowa State in 2003, and held Troy to 140 yards.

Lucky opened the scoring on the game's first series, hitting the corner and accelerating past free safety Tavares Williams on his way to his 34-yard touchdown.

Taylor, after a 49-yard pass to Nate Swift on first-and-35, found J.B. Phillips alone in the end zone for a 6-yard TD. Lucky's 45-yarder came after he broke through a hole at the line of scrimmage and outran cornerbacks Elbert Mack and Henry Chubb.

Wilson's 3-yard run ended a 12-play drive late in the half, and Lucky opened the third quarter with his 51-yarder up the middle.

"We were all frustrated after the SC game," Lucky said. "This whole week we were getting burned (in the media) because Coach was running too much and wasn't passing. We came out and dominated."

Taylor threw his first interception in 84 attempts when Justin Bray picked him off late in the first half.

Josh Allen led Troy rushers with 39 yards, and Omar Haugabook was 12-of-21 for 88 yards with an interception.

"I don't know when I've been around getting thrashed quite like that," Blakeney said. "We played pretty well against Florida State. We played pretty well against Georgia Tech. But this bunch of guys here, with their style of play and physical approach, presented us with more than we could handle."
