Quick thoughts on the game:
The good:
Zac taylor- great all day except for a couple passes.
Running Game-what a refreshing experience, an actual running game. All four looked solid.
D-Line- After the first couple drives, it looked like La Tech would be lucky to gain a yard.
The bad:
1st quarter recieving- couple dropped passes/just out of bounds plays.
Red zone offense- couple turnovers kept this from being a 50+ point game.
The ugly:
O-line penalties- holding calls brought back a touchdown run and a 20+yard pass that would have set up 1st and goal.
Secondary injuries- hopefully fluellen isn't hurt too bad, or we will be in even more trouble. Our DB's looked overmatched at times against La Tech, so that doesn't bode too well for USC. Grixby never really got burned, but he does tend to get beat on any jump ball. Safeties were out of position a couple times.
Overall, a pretty good 1st game, especially compared to last year's near debacle against Maine. Secondary will be a question mark all year, and I would look for opponents to exploit it. Still, the offense, if it can avoid red zone turnovers, looks to be very good this year. Hopefully next week will serve as a chance to improve in some areas as we prepare for the showdown with the Trojans.
