Nebraska and Penn State have been in discussions about scheduling a future home-and-home football series, a Nittany Lions athletic department official confirmed Thursday.
Fran Ganter, a Penn State associate athletic director, said the Nittany Lions’ football schedules are full until 2011. Nebraska is among about a half-dozen teams in discussions with PSU regarding schedule openings starting in 2012, Ganter said. The Nittany Lions also are in talks with Georgia and Florida State, among others, he said.
“Nebraska and Penn State have played so many great games,” Ganter said. “Our fans still talk about playing out there (in Lincoln).”
Nebraska defeated Penn State 18-10 in 2003 in Lincoln to atone for a 40-7 loss the previous year in State College, Pa. The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series 7-6.
Nebraska will play Virginia Tech in a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2009. The Huskers apparently are searching for a marquee non-conference opponent for 2010 and 2011. It won’t be Penn State — the Nittany Lions are playing a nonconference game against Alabama in those years, Ganter said.
“I don’t think I can schedule Alabama and Nebraska or our coaches would be in my office with a rope,” Ganter joked.
UCLA had surfaced in speculation as a potential Nebraska opponent for 2010 and 2011, that is until it was announced last week that Kansas State signed a two-year contract to play the Bruins in 2009 and 2010.
Ganter served as Penn State’s offensive coordinator from 1984 to 2003 before taking over in 2004 as associate athletic director for football administration.
This would be a fun series.
